In the heart of Java, Indonesia, nestled between rice paddies and the majestic slopes of Mount Merbabu, the province of Boyolali is home to a village where the sound of hammers on metal still echoes: Tumang. This small, discreet hamlet, rich in unique heritage, has been the cradle of an ancestral art for centuries: copper work.

A tradition that originated in the 16th century

The history of copper craftsmanship in Tumang dates back to the 16th century, to the time of the Islamic kingdom of Mataram.

According to local accounts, a nobleman named Ronggowulan, forced to leave the court due to an infirmity, settled in this remote region of Java. He founded the village of Tumang and passed on his knowledge of metallurgy to the inhabitants.

Originally, these copper pieces were intended for royal rituals: sacred objects, ceremonial accessories, refined ornaments. These creations embodied prestige, spirituality, and elegance, and laid the foundations for a know-how that has been passed down from generation to generation.

In the 1930s, King Pakubuwono X discovered a unique tradition among the people of Tumang: many villagers possessed the craftsmanship to transform copper scraps into cooking utensils. Admiring this distinctive trait, the king declared, "Continue, this skill will contribute to your prosperity."

To this day, the inhabitants of Tumang perpetuate traditional techniques while innovating to meet contemporary demands, and the village is recognized as a major center for copper craftsmanship in Indonesia.

The talent of Tumang's artisans

Working with copper is like taming a living material. In Tumang, artisans perpetuate age-old techniques with admirable precision and patience: heating the metal, hand-hammering, shaping, engraving… Each piece is entirely handcrafted, with meticulous attention to detail.

The textures achieved through hammering create unique, almost hypnotic reflections. Copper can be polished to shine like gold, or patinated to give it a more raw, natural elegance. Some objects are even adorned with traditional Javanese motifs, hand-engraved, adding a strong artistic and cultural dimension.
