Indonesia is an archipelago of 13,000 islands shaped by more than one hundred active volcanoes. On the island of Java, this geological activity has given rise to natural stones of exceptional beauty and resistance.

For centuries, these volcanic stones have been used to build temples, sculpt statues, and decorate traditional gardens. Today, they also appeal to architects and landscape designers worldwide for their durability, authenticity, and unique aesthetic.

At Monde en Mains, we work directly with Indonesian artisans to select some of the finest natural stones from Java for creating basins, producing pool tiles, garden statues, and garden furniture. Among these remarkable materials, some stones are particularly iconic: the famous Balinese pool stone, volcanic lava stone, andesite used for statues, as well as decorative stones like onyx and marble.

Bali stone: the ideal natural stone for pool lining

Often called Bali stone, the stone used in high-end swimming pools is actually Green Sukabumi, quarried in the Sukabumi region of West Java. This volcanic stone has become a global benchmark for natural stone pool lining.

Its unique feature lies in its color, which takes on an emerald hue when immersed in water. This effect gives swimming pools the appearance of a natural lagoon, highly sought after in tropical architecture.

This is why Balinese stone is now used in luxury hotels in Bali, villas in the Maldives, high-end hotels in Asia and Mexico, and private swimming pool projects worldwide.

Sukabumi stone possesses several technical qualities that explain its success in swimming pool projects:

• low porosity

• naturally non-slip surface

• High resistance to chlorine and chemicals

• presence of zeolite, a mineral known for its filtering properties

Thanks to these characteristics, Bali stone is now considered one of the best natural materials for pool linings.

Indonesian lava stone: a raw and elegant volcanic stone

Another iconic stone of Java: volcanic lava stone.

Formed from the cooling of lava, this stone has a dark color ranging from anthracite grey to deep black, with a slightly porous texture that gives it a very mineral appearance.

It is particularly valued for exterior architecture and landscape design. It can be found notably in:

• Exterior and even interior wall coverings

• the terraces and walkways

• pool coping stones

• the statues

Lava stone instantly brings a natural and contemporary style to outdoor spaces.

In Java, working with volcanic stone is an ancient craft. Artisans hand-carve the stone to create unique statues and decorative elements such as Buddha statues, Balinese sculptures, and garden lanterns. These pieces become true focal points in a garden or landscaped space.

Green andesite: the stone of Indonesian statues

Stone garden furniture

Andesite is an extremely dense volcanic rock used for over a thousand years in Indonesian architecture. The famous Borobudur temple, one of the largest Buddhist temples in the world, was built with this stone. Its green andesite variety is now widely used for Indonesian statues and garden sculptures. An ideal stone for garden statues: Thanks to its exceptional weather resistance, andesite is particularly well-suited for outdoor applications.

Stone Buddha statue

It allows you to create Buddha statues, Balinese sculptures of temple guardians, garden decorations...

Over time, this stone develops an elegant natural patina, which enhances its authentic character.

Onyx and marble: exceptional decorative stones

In addition to volcanic stones, Java also has quarries of onyx and natural marble, used in decoration and crafts.

Onyx: a spectacular translucent stone

Onyx is a semi-precious stone known for its natural transparency. When backlit, it reveals spectacular veins in honey/golden beige/cream tones.

It is often used to create basins, decorative objects, trays, decorative panels, and elements of garden furniture.

Each piece is unique, as the patterns of onyx never repeat.

Javanese marble: elegance and timelessness

Javanese marble is prized for its soft and elegant natural hues. It can be found in washbasins, decorative objects such as exquisite chess sets, and also in furniture.

It brings a timeless and refined touch to interiors.

Natural stones from Java: between nature, craftsmanship and design

Indonesian natural stones are much more than just materials. They embody the meeting of the power of Indonesian volcanoes, the know-how of artisans and a timeless natural aesthetic.

At Monde en Mains, we select these stones directly from our partner artisans and Indonesian quarries in order to offer statues, objects and garden furniture made from authentic and durable stones.

Each piece tells a story and brings a fragment of nature from Java into your home or garden.
